HOT TUB COVERS

The Unsung Hero of Spa Maintenance:

Why a High-Quality Hot Tub Cover Matters

A hot tub represents an investment in relaxation, physical recovery, and backyard enjoyment.

However, its efficiency, safety, and longevity depend heavily on a single component.

A Hot Tub Cover.

Often treated as an afterthought.

A hot tub cover is an essential protective barrier. It directly impacts energy consumption, water chemistry, and equipment lifespan.

The 3 Key Benefits of a
Quality Hot Tub Cover

1. Thermal Retention and Energy Efficiency

Evaporation accounts for up to 75% of a hot tub’s heat loss. When water evaporates, it carries thermal energy into the open air. Forcing the heater to run continuously to maintain temperature.

  • Insulation Core. A high-density foam core traps heat inside the tub, reducing energy draw.
  • Vapor Barrier. Sealed marine-grade vinyl prevents moisture absorption, preserving the foam’s insulating properties over time.
  • Lower Operating Costs. Keeping the hot tub covered when not in use. Significantly reduces monthly electricity bills.

2. Debris Protection and Water Chemistry Balance

Uncovered hot tubs act as magnets for airborne contaminants. Like leaves, twigs, dirt, insects, and pollen.

  • Filter Strain Reduction. Keeping physical debris out minimizes clogging. Extending the life of the circulation pump and filtration media.
  • Chemical Savings. Organic matter breakdown consumes chlorine and bromine rapidly. By preventing debris entry, chemical demand stabilizes, saving money on water treatment supplies.
  • UV Shielding. Direct sunlight degrades sanitizers (especially chlorine) and accelerates algae growth. A solid cover blocks UV rays .

3. Safety and Security

An open spa presents a hazard for young children, pets, and wildlife. Hot tub covers that are American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) compliant, feature lockable tie-down straps. These secure the cover tightly to the cabinet. Preventing accidental access or displacement during heavy wind storms.

Help with Energy Bills

One of the largest expenses of maintaining a hot tub is the power bill for keeping the water heated. Not having a quality, insulated hot tub cover to help maintain optimal temperature levels will lead to higher power bills.

Not to mention, it will allow you to use the hot tub quicker than having to wait for it to heat up.

Convenience & Durability

We have seen people try and use a tarp as a hot tub cover. While it may work to help leaves, bugs and twigs out of the hot tub. It certainly won’t help keep the heat in.

What is going to happen when the wind picks up? Depending on how the tarp is attached to the hot tub. Chances are it will blow off (eventually) then what is the tarp doing? Nothing.

If you try and hold the tarp down with heavy objects. Like bricks or stones. That causes a hazard to anyone on the outside of the tub, including children and pets. Then what happens if one of those bricks falls in the tub and damages the acrylic or a jet?

Let’s face it, hot tubs are expensive. Why not spend the extra money and properly protect it.

Think Hot Tub Safety

As a hot tub owner (as well as with pools), one of the risks is having curious children or pets fall in when there is no adult supervision.

A hot tub cover is a drowning hazard. A tarp will not prevent this from happening.

Water Conservation & Cleanliness

The whole reason behind buying a hot tub is to use it to relax and release stress. This can’t be achieved if the water in the hot tub is not safe to use.

The chemicals that are required to keep the water clean and safe will not work that well if the hot tub is open to the elements.

Cleanliness is one of the most vital aspects of owning a cover.

Hot tub water chemistry is very delicate. Leaving the hot tub uncovered will cost you more money to try and keep the water balanced.

Since hot tubs are not drained and refilled after every use. It is critical to maintaining the water chemistry between use.

If you do not have a hot tub cover or are using something inadequate. You’re going to need to empty and refill your hot tub more often to keep it clean.

Not to mention the evaporation of water from your hot tub will mean you will need to add more water. Then treat the water over and over to keep it optimal.

A hot tub cover prevents water evaporation.

HOW TO MEASURE A HOT TUB
FOR A HOT TUB COVER

Always measure the outside edge of the acrylic shell (lip-to-lip). Do not use the old cover as it may have stretched or warped overtime.

Round up all measurements to the nearest half-inch or inch—a cover that is slightly too big will still fit, but one that is too small will break the thermal seal.

How To Measure for Hot Tub Cover

HOT TUB COVER SKIRT

On a hot tub cover, the skirt is the short flap of vinyl fabric that hangs down from the bottom edge of the cover, draped over the hot tub’s acrylic rim and cabinet.

Core Purposes of a Cover Skirt

Protects the Acrylic Lip: It shields the exposed top rim of the spa shell from UV degradation, sunlight exposure, dirt, and debris.

Improves Heat Retention: Acting as a wind barrier, it prevents cold air from blowing underneath the main foam seal and keeps heat trapped inside the water.

Enhances Water Runoff: Rain and melting snow run off the sloped top of the cover and slide down the outside of the skirt, shedding water away from the spa cabinet rather than seeping into the seam.

Key Measuring Tips for the Skirt

Standard Length: Most skirts are between 3 inches and 5 inches long.

Deck Rim Clearance: If your hot tub sits flush inside an surrounding wooden deck or coping, you need a 0-inch skirt (or a flat flap) so the cover lies completely flat without bunching up.

Cabinet Overlap: The skirt should hang long enough to cover the rim completely, but short enough that it doesn’t bunch up against the top ledge of the outer cabinet paneling.

If a claim is made in the 17th through 20th month the foam cores will be replaced at a 20% discount.

If a claim is made in the 21st through 24th month the foam cores will be replaced at a 10% discount.

Please note that any puncture of the polyethylene vapor barrier renders the foam core warranty null and void.

For example, if Divi says a module isn’t available

I’d look for a missing plugin or extension. If the warning relates to presets or settings, I’d investigate how the layout was exported and whether its presets were imported. Divi supports importing presets with layouts, but custom CSS stored separately in Theme Options or the Customizer may need to be transferred separately.
